ELION ALEXANDER J. “ALEX” 1932 - 2016, Alexander Johnnie “Alex” Elion, age 83, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on May 4, 2016, at Carrington Manor Assisted Living in Crestview, Florida. Born and raised in Bound Brook, New Jersey to parents, Kimon and Demetria Eliou, he later graduated from Rutgers University. A veteran of the Korean War, Alex received the Bronze Star for meritorious service in the United States Army and was recognized 50 years later by the Republic of Korea for his efforts in service to their people. Upon graduation, Alex moved to Pittsburgh and dedicated 32 years as a civil engineer for Allegheny County, Southwestern Pennsylvania while furthering his studies at the University of Pittsburgh. He married and was a loving father to three children, John (Sandy Boggs), Jeanne (Michael McMullen), and Jenni (Will Woltz). He later married his soul mate, Victoria (Pagnoni), and became a devoted father figure to Robert Willette (Mariela Estevez) and Jennifer Willette-Pioli and grandchildren, Yusuf Ali and Safiyyah Scott (Bernard Brooks). Also mourning the loss of their beloved Papu are treasured grandchildren, Auriel, Katy, Caitlyn and Adrienne; seven great- grandchildren; a great-great- grandchild; numerous cousins; and loyal companion, a 12-year old beagle, Sweet Pea. Fiercely proud of his Greek heritage, he was best known as a studious but witty man with many talents. An avid reader of history and science, he was a lifelong learner, yet at the same time, a prankster at home and office. He loved chess, war games and strumming bluegrass on his guitar, but his passion was sailing. He fulfilled a lifelong dream when he acquired his first sailboat, aptly named 'Bout Time. He enjoyed many years as captain sailing Lake Pymatuning, Pennsylvania before retiring to Destin, Florida to navigate the Choctawhatchee Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Never there was a kinder, gentler soul than he. Alex will be deeply missed by friends and loved ones, but most of all, by his loving wife of 39 years. A visitation followed by a memorial service will be held June 9, 2016, from 1:00-5:00 p.m. at Ft. Walton Yacht Club, Ft. Walton Beach, Florida. A military service will be held August 6, 2016, at 10 a.m. in the National Military Cemetery of the Alleghenies in Bridgeville just outside of Pittsburgh. Memorial donations may be made to Carrington Manor, Magnolia Manor Senior Day Care of Ft. Walton Beach and Emerald Coast Hospice of Crestview. The family wishes to thank each of them for their dedication, tireless efforts and invaluable support over the years. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb

IMBER EDWARD A. Age 87, "passed through" on May 7, 2016, as one of his poems "Only Passing Through" conveys that we are on Earth briefly and pass through to meet our maker. Ed was born to Mazie Ritchey and Thomas Saprito in Wexford, PA, and graduated from West View High School in 1946. He served his country in the Korean War and was a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal. Ed and Elly married soon after meeting at West View Park and had five children, Edward, Lynne (Ron) Gross, Thomas (Anita Huwe), Cynthia, and Kimberly (Normand Poulin). He was a loving pap of six grandchildren; and an adoring double-pap of two great-grandchildren. Ed had a vast love for life, always taking chances and never had regrets. He often said if he could do it over, he'd do it twice as fast. He loved poetry, literature, airplanes, cars, animals (especially his beloved greyhound, Wooshka), and was a teller of stories. "Edward The Great," his signature name in his writings will be missed by many. A Celebration of Life to be held on a future date. Garman and Cecil Washburn Garman in Hillsboro, OH, he grew up helping with the family dairy business. He graduated in 1951 from Hillsboro High School lettering in basketball, a sport he would follow, including a leisure activity refereeing intramural basketball games. After four years serving his country in the Air Force, George attended Ohio State University followed by a career with the Ohio Department of Transportation as an Asphalt Research Analyst in Marietta, OH. Mr. Garman had a beautiful tenor voice and joined the Parkersburg, WV First Methodist Church choir where he met and married Jeanne Kathryn Tuttle in 1962. Mr. Garman was an active participant in the VFW and a loyal contributor to veteran charities including Korean War Veterans, Vietnam Veterans and Wounded Warriors. About Mr. Garman, his daughter noted, “He was a simple man…bright, humble and good, funny as could be. He cared little about even the ordinary possessions most people require. My mother meant the world to him; their existence was simple and graceful. He treasured his family and Hillsboro roots and often recalled the Ohio days speaking with fondness and admiration of his three brothers and sister and their offspring, his parents and dog, Jerry.” Since his wife's passing in October 2015, he lived with his daughter and son-in-law in Pittsburgh's North Hills where he enjoyed the surroundings, deer and birds, watching Pirates, Steelers and NBA, reading and doting on Pressley, the family Corgi. Grieving Mr. Garman's passing are a daughter, Mariellen Garman Ramsdell and son-in-law, Paul Ramsdell, of Wexford, PA; and many friends and surviving family members.
