COHEN GEORGE H. Age 92, on Tuesday, May 17, 2016. He was preceded in death in 2014 by his beloved wife of almost 70 years, Doris Mae Hilliard. Born in State College, Pennsylvania on February 3, 1924, he graduated from State College High School in 1941. He was an Eagle Scout in Troop 4 of State College. During WWII he enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he served as a First Lieutenant for the 393rd Bomb Squadron, part of the 509th Composite Group. He was assigned to the B-29 “Top Secret” and participated in both Atomic Missions. He was in the backup B-29 for the Enola Gay for the Hiroshima Mission on August 6, 1945, and advance weather B-29 for the Nagasaki Mission on August 9, 1945. He earned the Air Medal of Valor, his Wings as Flight Engineer, and recognition for serving in the American and Pacific Theaters. Following the war, he earned a Bachelor and Master's degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Penn State and served as the Marshall for the College of Engineering at graduation. In 1952, he attended the School of Reactor Technology in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, one of only 20 people selected from around the country to attend. He worked at General Electric for the US Navy in Hamilton, Ohio for two years. After that, he moved to Pittsburgh, PA to work at Bettis Atomic Power Lab, Westinghouse, where he spent the rest of his working days. Major accomplishments at Bettis included designing nuclear reactors for the submarine USS Skate and the first nuclear powered aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise. He is survived by a sister, Mary Cohen of Grosse Pointe Farms, MI; and children, Linda Stern of Arivaca, AZ, Louise Victor (Richard) of Boalsburg, PA, Lisa Reynolds (Bob) of Pittsburgh, Lorraine Puharic (Tony) of Woodbridge, VA and Lucille Marze (Mike) of Pittsburgh. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were son, Lawrence Cohen of Fremont, CA; and daughter, Laurel Cohen of Pittsburgh. George was an avid skier who skied until he was 80. One of his favorite activities was building computers. Visitation was private. Arrangements handled by the JOHN F. SCHULZ JEFFREY NORMAN Age 70, passed away at his home in Pittsburgh on Sunday, May 15, 2016. Jeff was born on October 28, 1945, to Doris Wagner Schulz. He entered the Navy in 1966 and served active duty for four years. He was honorably discharged in 1972. Jeff was known to everyone for his passion for motorcycles, travel, and his family. He had an uncanny ability to strike up a conversation with anyone he met. He had a generous soul, was an intensely loyal friend, and a devoted father. No matter the curveballs that life threw at him, he was always able to find the positive in any situation. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. Jeff is survived by his partner, Pamela Ayers; two daughters, Ryan and Erin Schulz; his aunt, Gloria Buchleitner; and countless friends. D'ALESSANDRO MARY N. Age 96, of Castle Shannon and formerly of Upper St. Clair and Texas, died peacefully Tuesday, May 17, 2016. Wife of the late Albert D'Alessandro; mother of Roy (Carol), Bethel Park; Robert (Diane), Rochester, NY; John, Arlington, TX; and Albert II, Plano, TX. Also survived by ten grandchildren; 15 great- grandchildren; and one great- great-grandchild. Mary loved the Lord and lived to serve Him. She was a founding member of Christian Missionary Alliance Church of Upper St. Clair. Mary's passion was to share her faith, teaching others and blessing them with her service. She shared the gospel of Christ with children through Child Evangelism for more than 40 years. At John J. Kane hospital she brought many elderly individuals peace and comfort for more than 30 years. DOWD JOHN “SPADE” A. Age 71, of Bethel Park, PA formerly of Mt. Washington, PA and Whitehall, PA passed away peacefully with his family by his side after a 13-year long battle with prostate cancer from agent orange on Tuesday, May 17, 2016. John leaves his cherished wife, Roberta (DeSeau) Dowd of 45 years; his wonderful children, Bethany (Michael Bonidie) Denner-Bonidie, Robert (Nichole) Dowd; cherished nephew, Jason Wyndroski; his three wonderful grandchildren, Zachary Denner, Tyler Denner and Antonio Bonidie. He also leaves his dog, Piper his “girlfriend.” John leaves three brothers, Andrew, Joseph and James; seven sisters, Ellen Nagel, Peg Dowd, Mary Miller, Theresa Tambellini, Ann Obeldobel, Charlotte Dowd and Karen Herald. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew Joseph Dowd and Ellen May Caveney Dowd; his infant brother, Richard “Dickie” Dowd; and his in-laws, Robert and Sara DeSeau. John made Sergeant while serving in Vietnam and was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a Special Delivery Messenger and driving instructor for 35 years. John's best friend and business partner was Robert McMahon. John will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. SHARP CAROL WILLIAMS Of Sarasota, Florida and formerly of Sewickley, passed away peacefully May 10, 2016, with her family by her side. She was born in Chicago, the daughter of Keith and Bessie Williams. She grew up in Buffalo, where she met and married Fred Irwin Sharp, her beloved husband for over 63 years. They initially lived in Cleveland and moved to Sewickley in 1958 where they lived in the same house until Fred passed away in 2011. She was the loving mother of Kimberly (Lawrence) Fierst of Sarasota, Florida and Lisa (Peter Kohnstamm) Hord of Pelham, New York; and the proud grandmother of Molly Williams Hord, Sophie McCullough Hord and Jackson Sharp Hord. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Betty Eslick and Nancy Fiske, and her son-in-law, Montgomery Hord. She was active as a volunteer for many organizations. She served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Sewickley Academy. She also served for ten years as a member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council and was a member and past president of the Women's Committee of the Carnegie Museum. A Memorial Service will be held for the family at a future date. WINTER PETER M., M.D. Passed away on May 14, 2016, in Issaquah, Washington, at the age of 81. Peter was born on August 5, 1934, in Sverdlovsk, USSR to George and Anne Winter. He grew up in Ithaca, New York where his father, George, was a professor of structural engineering at Cornell University. He enrolled in Cornell at the age of 16 and, after a stint in the Army during the Korean War, graduated with the intent of pursuing a career in medicine. He graduated from the University of Rochester School of Medicine in 1958 and completed a rotating internship at the University of Utah School of Medicine. A residency in anesthesiology at Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts General Hospital was a pivotal point in Peter's career as he acquired clinical skills as well as being mentored in scientific research. He completed his residency in 1967 and was awarded a Buswell Fellowship at State University of New York at Buffalo where he continued his research in oxygen toxicity. In 1969, he accepted a position in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle where he continued to pursue his research interests in addition to his clinical responsibilities. He was awarded a Research Career Development Award from the NIH. In 1979, he accepted the position of Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center where he succeeded Dr. Peter Safar, a close friend and mentor. In recognition of his exceptional contribution to scientific research and education, the University of Pittsburgh dedicated the Peter M. Winter Institute for Simulation Education and Research (WISER) in his honor. He published more than 70 peer-reviewed articles and edited the first textbook in the field of transplantation anesthesia. Long after his retirement, he continued to work at UPMC as Professor Emeritus where he took particular joy in mentoring young physicians and supporting their research efforts. Peter also loved exploring the outdoors and seeking adventure. He pursued mountaineering with great passion while he lived in Seattle. During the 1970s, he made two trips to Nepal and trekked to Everest base camp. Later in life, he turned to sailing, enjoying many beautiful nights aboard The Hermitage, his 37-foot sloop, which he sailed from Maine to the tropical islands of the Bahamas. He had a particular love for the coast of Maine where he spent summers in a cottage built by his parents overlooking the sea. Peter is survived by his daughter, Karin McCloskey, and her husband, Leo, of Sammamish, Washington; his son, Christopher, and his wife, Kristin, of Portland, Oregon; and his daughters, Lia and Tori, of Pittsburgh, PA. He is also survived by his three grandchildren, daughters of Karin and Leo McCloskey, Kylie, Nadia, and Carys and his former wife, Madge. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in his memory be made to the American Alpine Club (americanalpineclub.org) or Crag Law Center (crag.org). The family is planning a private memorial. Beloved wife of the late Roy John Buettner whom she married on February 19, 1945, in Peterborough, England. Loving mother of Janet Rushmore and the late Roy Michael Buettner and Patricia Donnelly; sister of the late Seymour J. Brandall; cherished grandmother of Nancy Donnelly, Terri (James) Metzger, Amy (Marco) Bonati, William (Michelle) Rushmore and Heather Rushmore; great-grandmother of Charles, Sarah, Regan, Bradley, Evan, Sofia, Jack, Telio and Kaycee. Also survived by nieces and nephews in England. Nancy volunteered to serve in the British Women's Land Army where she worked on local farms to provide food for England during World War II. It was then that she met and married (70 years) her husband, Roy. She joined the British Wives Club when she came to America. Nancy had been a member and past president of St. Ursula Christian Mothers-Guild since 1951, sang soprano in the church choir for several years, and was active in local politics. Known for her British wit and love for "500-bid" cards, Nancy also loved to sew, do crosswords, and travel the world.
